# Supported file types

> Which file types you can upload to Realm, and the size limits

Realm accepts different file types in different places. Most uploads use the general list. RFP questionnaires, document templates, and skills use shorter lists.

| Where you upload | File types |
| - | - |
| Knowledge (shared and private files), chat attachments, project files, and the document editor | [General uploads](#general-uploads) |
| RFP questionnaires and past RFPs | [RFPs and questionnaires](#rfps-and-questionnaires) |
| Document responses | [Document responses](#document-responses) |
| Files attached to RFP rows | [Row attachments](#row-attachments) |
| Document templates | [Documents and skills](#documents-and-skills) |
| Skills | [Documents and skills](#documents-and-skills) |

## General uploads

These file types work for knowledge uploads (shared and private files), chat attachments, project files (supporting files and deliverables), and **Upload a file** in the document editor. The document editor works on one document at a time, so it does not accept ZIP files.

| Group | File types |
| - | - |
| Documents | .pdf, .doc, .docx, .odt, .rtf, .txt, .md, .rst, .org, .epub, .html, .htm, .xml, .json, .eml, .msg |
| Presentations | .ppt, .pptx |
| Spreadsheets and data | .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb, .xls, .ods, .fods, .csv, .tsv, .wk1, .wk3, .dbf, .dif, .slk, .sylk, .prn |
| Images | .png, .jpg, .jpeg, .bmp, .tiff, .heic, .svg |
| Translation and localization | .xliff, .xlf, .mxliff, .mqxliff, .sdlxliff, .tmx, .srx, .po |
| Code and scripts | .js, .jsx, .ts, .tsx, .py, .rb, .go, .rs, .java, .c, .cpp, .h, .hpp, .cs, .php, .swift, .kt, .scala, .sh, .bash, .sql, .cmd, .bat, .ps1 |
| Visual Studio and .NET | .bas, .vb, .vbs, .asp, .aspx, .xaml, .csproj, .vbproj, .sln, .config, .resx |
| Power BI | .dax, .pq, .bim, .tmdl, .rdl, .rdlc |
| Configuration | .yaml, .yml, .toml, .ini, .cfg, .env, .log, .conf, .properties |
| Archives | .zip |

Realm rejects other file types with the message "This filetype is not supported". If a text file has another extension, rename it to .txt and upload it again.

## Limits

* Each file can be up to 200 MB.
* By default, you can attach up to 20 files to each Chat message. Your organization can have a different limit.

## ZIP files

You can upload a ZIP file of up to 1 GB. Realm extracts it and uploads each supported file inside.

* A ZIP file can hold up to 100 files.
* Each file inside can be up to 200 MB.
* The total uncompressed size can be up to 1 GB.
* A ZIP file inside a ZIP file is extracted one level deep only.

Realm skips these files without a message:

* Files of a type that is not supported.
* Hidden files (names that start with a dot).
* Files over 200 MB.

## RFPs and questionnaires

Use these file types for RFPs you fill, the **Questionnaires to fill** section of a project, **Import past RFPs**, and the **Past RFPs** upload in Knowledge:

.xlsx, .xlsm, .xls, .csv, .pdf, .docx, .doc

Supporting files in a project accept all [general upload](#general-uploads) types.

### Document responses

For free-form RFPs and the **Documents to respond to** section, use the questionnaire types and two more: .txt and .md.

### Row attachments

You can upload a file into an RFP row from your computer. These file types work:

.pdf, .doc, .docx, .ppt, .pptx, .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb, .xls, .ods, .fods, .wk1, .wk3, .dbf, .dif, .slk, .sylk, .prn

You cannot upload Google Docs and Google Slides files. Attach them from your knowledge instead. See [Attachments](/rfp/attachments).

## Documents and skills

| Where | File types |
| - | - |
| Create a document template from a file | .pdf, .docx, .doc, .md, .txt |
| **Match formatting of** a reference document | .docx |
| Upload a skill | A .zip bundle of up to 50 MB, or a single .md or .txt file. Each file in the skill can be up to 25 MB. |
